Draft Circular; Dated: 23.10.2025
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed to ease the requirement mandating Non-Resident Indian (NRI) clients to be physically present in India for re-KYC or KYC modification processes conducted through digital onboarding or Video-based Customer Identification Process (V-CIP).
Key Highlights
- Proposed Amendment – SEBI has proposed to modify Para 51 of the KYC Master Circular to relax the India geo-location requirement for existing NRI clients, thereby facilitating smoother compliance without requiring physical presence in India.
- Safeguards for Compliance – The proposal incorporates multiple verification measures, including:
-
- Random action checks during the verification process.
- Timestamping of KYC actions.
- GPS matching with the country mentioned in the Proof of Address.
- Detection and prevention of spoofed IP connections to maintain process integrity.
This move aims to simplify re-KYC for NRIs while ensuring robust verification and data security in line with SEBI’s KYC framework.
