The Government of India has appointed Dr Poonam Gupta as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a tenure of three years from the date of assuming charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
1. Leadership Role at the RBI
In her role as Deputy Governor, Dr. Gupta will be responsible for overseeing several key departments critical to the central bank’s policy formulation, market operations, and institutional communication. These include:
- Monetary Policy Department
- Financial Markets Operations Department
- Financial Stability Department
- International Department
- Department of Statistics and Information Management
- Budget Department
- Department of Communication
2. Significance of the Appointment
Dr. Gupta’s appointment comes at a crucial time, with the Indian economy navigating global uncertainties, inflationary pressures, and evolving financial market dynamics. Her experience in macroeconomics, public policy, and global economic affairs is expected to strengthen the RBI’s policy formulation and implementation frameworks.
