IFRS Digital Taxonomies

Editorial Team – [2026] 187 taxmann.com 926 (Article)

Global Financial Insights is a weekly feature for the Accounts and Audit Module subscribers of Taxmann.com. It provides you with the latest updates on financial reporting and auditing practices from across the globe. Here is this week’s financial update:
1. IFRS Foundation updates guide on IFRS digital taxonomies architecture
The IFRS Foundation has released an updated guide explaining the architecture of its IFRS digital taxonomies, which are used to convert IFRS Accounting Standards and IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards into a structured, machine-readable format using eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL).
The guide outlines the technical framework underpinning the IFRS digital taxonomies and explains how the architecture supports their implementation, extension and application in digital financial reporting. It is intended to help preparers, regulators, software providers and other stakeholders better understand the design and functionality of the taxonomies.
The publication forms part of the IFRS Foundation’s broader efforts to support the adoption and effective use of digital reporting tools and enhance the consistency and accessibility of IFRS-based financial and sustainability information.

2. FASB proposes an Accounting Standard Update to make targeted improvements to Hedge Accounting
The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has issued a proposed Accounting Standards Update (ASU) seeking to enhance certain aspects of hedge accounting related to interest rate risk hedging and net investment hedging. The proposals have been developed in response to stakeholder feedback requesting limited amendments that would better align accounting outcomes with entities’ risk management strategies.
The proposed changes would permit entities to hedge interest rate risk associated with held-to-maturity debt securities, expand the use of SOFR-based hedging instruments by allowing any SOFR tenor to be designated, and broaden the range of eligible instruments for net investment hedges by permitting certain cross-currency swaps with differing reset dates.
According to the FASB, the amendments are intended to improve the representation of risk management activities in financial reporting while providing more useful information to investors and preparers. The proposals would apply to entities that elect to apply hedge accounting guidance under U.S. GAAP.
Comments on the proposed ASU are invited until 17th August 2026.
