Finance Ministry Allows TransUnion CIBIL to Use Aadhaar for Credit Report Access

The Ministry of Finance has permitted TransUnion CIBIL Limited to use Aadhaar authentication for identity verification of users accessing credit information reports on its platform.
1. Scope of Aadhaar Authentication
The approval allows TransUnion CIBIL to use Aadhaar-based authentication strictly for:
- User registration on the CIBIL platform
- Login and identity verification for accessing credit information reports
The use of Aadhaar authentication will be voluntary and not mandatory for users.
2. Availability of Alternative Identification Options
Users must be provided with alternative identification methods if they choose not to use Aadhaar authentication. These alternatives include:
- Permanent Account Number (PAN)
- Passport
- Voter ID
- Driving Licence
- Ration Card
This ensures that access to credit information services remains inclusive and accessible without mandatory Aadhaar usage.
3. Safeguards and Limitations
The permission granted is subject to the following safeguards:
- Aadhaar authentication can be used only for identity verification during registration and login
- It cannot be made compulsory for accessing services
- Alternative identity verification mechanisms must remain available at all times
4. Objective of the Permission
The move aims to facilitate secure and convenient identity verification for users accessing credit information reports, while maintaining user choice and ensuring compliance with data protection and regulatory requirements.
