1. Appointment of New SEBI Board Member
The Ministry of Finance has notified the appointment of Shri Shirish Chandra Murmu, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as a Member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
2. Statutory Basis of Appointment
The appointment has been made under Section 4(1)(c) of the SEBI Act, 1992, which provides for the inclusion of one member from the Reserve Bank of India on the SEBI Board.
This ensures regulatory coordination between the securities market and the banking/monetary system.
3. Replacement of Earlier Entry
The Ministry’s notification substitutes the previous name appearing at the corresponding serial number with that of Shri Murmu.
This change formally updates the composition of the SEBI Board as recorded in the official notification.
4. Role and Significance
As the RBI nominee on the SEBI Board, Shri Shirish Chandra Murmu will contribute to:
- Strengthening regulatory coherence between SEBI and RBI
- Enhancing oversight of financial markets
- Supporting policymaking for investor protection and market stability
