To download your AIBE certificate, log in to the official AIBE portal with the User ID and password used for your application, open the result or certificate section, and download the PDF. The result shows a straight PASS or FAIL against your roll number; the AIBE does not publish sectional or overall scores. Qualifying candidates are then issued the Certificate of Practice, which is what actually authorises an advocate to appear in court.
For AIBE XXII, held on 29 November 2026, the Bar Council has given the result declaration as between 7 and 10 January 2027.

1. How to check the AIBE result
The result is published on the official AIBE portal after the provisional answer key, the objection window and the final answer key have run their course. For the declaration date, the cut-off and the AIBE XXI statistics, see our dedicated page on the AIBE result.
To check it:
- Go to the official AIBE portal.
- Log in with the User ID and password you used for your application. These are the same credentials, not a new set.
- Open the result or scorecard section for your edition of the examination.
- Download and save the PDF.
The scorecard carries your roll number and your qualification status. Nothing else. The Bar Council does not release sectional marks or an overall score for the AIBE, so there is no mark to appeal against; the only post-result remedy is the rechecking window, where one is opened, on payment of the prescribed fee.
If you have lost the credentials, use the password recovery option on the portal rather than creating a fresh account. A second account will not be linked to your application.
2. How to download your AIBE certificate
This is the step most candidates search for and it is worth separating from the result itself, because they are two different documents.
The result or scorecard is generated by the AIBE portal and is downloadable there as soon as results are declared. It is proof of your qualification status and is the document you attach to any subsequent application.
The Certificate of Practice is a physical certificate issued by the Bar Council of India under the signature of its Chairman and sent to the address of the successful advocate. It is not, in the ordinary course, a self-service download.
So if you are looking to download something immediately after results:
- Log in to the AIBE portal with your existing User ID and password
- Download the result or scorecard PDF and keep a printed copy
- Retain the application confirmation receipt alongside it
- Expect the Certificate of Practice to follow separately, by post to your registered address
Keep the registered address current with the Bar Council, because that is where the certificate is despatched.
3. Qualifying marks, and why the pass mark can change
The qualifying percentage is 45% for General and OBC candidates and 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. On a paper of 100 questions with one mark each and no negative marking, that is 45 marks and 40 marks.
The percentage is fixed. The number of marks is not, and it has moved in each of the last two examinations by two different routes.
Withdrawal of questions. Where questions are withdrawn after the objection window, whether for a technical error or on a valid objection, they are removed from evaluation altogether and no bonus mark is awarded. The paper is then marked out of the reduced total. In AIBE XX the Bar Council withdrew five questions, so the paper was evaluated out of 95 and the qualifying score became 45% of 95, which is 42.75 and was taken as 43, and 40% of 95, which is 38.
Moderation. AIBE XXI worked the other way. The Bar Council’s press release of 18 July 2026 records that the result was directed to be calculated on the basis of 100 marks, with no questions withdrawn, and that the Monitoring Committee decided unanimously to moderate the result and reduce the qualifying marks by three. The cut-off fell to 42 and 37.
For context on the scale: of the 1,75,701 candidates who appeared in AIBE XXI, 1,15,805 qualified and 59,876 did not, a pass percentage of 65.92%.
Our note on AIBE passing marks works through the arithmetic in full.
4. If you did not qualify
You sit it again, and there is no cap. Rule 10(1)(e) of Part VI, Chapter III of the Bar Council of India Rules provides that an unsuccessful advocate may appear again for the Bar Examination without any limit on the number of attempts. No penalty or additional condition attaches to reappearing.
One clock does run, and it is not the examination’s. A law graduate who enrols with a State Bar Council before clearing the AIBE receives a provisional enrolment certificate. It permits work under a senior advocate but not independent practice or appearance in court, and it is valid for two years from the date of enrolment. The AIBE has to be passed within that period for the enrolment to remain effective.
Candidates who failed a previous edition also do not need to register afresh. For AIBE XXII, the Bar Council’s notice of 19 August 2026 states that candidates who failed AIBE XX or AIBE XXI may log in with their existing User ID and password to fill and submit the application form.
5. What the Certificate of Practice is
Enrolment and practice are two different things, and the distinction catches people out.
Enrolment with a State Bar Council registers you as an advocate. The Certificate of Practice, issued by the Bar Council of India on qualifying the AIBE, is what authorises you to appear before any court, tribunal or legal authority in India. Without it, an enrolled advocate cannot represent clients in court.
What it gives you:
- Licence to practise. Appearance before any court in India, from district courts to the Supreme Court.
- Lifetime validity. Once the AIBE is cleared, the enrolment certificate becomes permanently valid and there is no requirement to reappear or renew.
- Recognition under the Advocates Act, 1961, and the professional standing that follows from it.
- Eligibility for higher legal positions, including judicial services, public prosecutor and government legal adviser roles.
- No jurisdictional restriction. You may practise in any court across India.
There is a further reason it now matters more than it did. The Supreme Court held in May 2025 that candidates for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division) must have practised for a minimum period before becoming eligible, and in August 2026 upheld that position while reducing the required period to one year. Courtroom practice is now a gateway to judicial service, and practice requires the certificate.
6. Steps to obtain the Certificate of Practice
- Confirm your result. Log in to the AIBE portal and download the scorecard showing PASS status.
- Apply for the certificate where an application is required. This may be initiated through the AIBE portal or through your State Bar Council, depending on the instructions issued for that edition.
- Submit the documents. Typically the AIBE result or rank card, proof of enrolment with your State Bar Council, a valid photo ID, and recent passport-size photographs.
- Verification. The Bar Council of India or your State Bar Council verifies the documents and the enrolment record.
- Pay the prescribed fee, where one applies.
- Issue and despatch. The certificate is issued under the signature of the Chairman, Bar Council of India, and sent to your registered address.
- Register locally with the courts where you intend to appear, where those courts require advocates to be listed.
Procedures vary slightly between State Bar Councils and change between editions. Check the official Bar Council of India portal or your State Bar Council for the current position.
7. How long it takes
There is a statutory timeline and it is worth knowing, because it is the figure to quote if the certificate is delayed.
Rule 11(1) of Part VI, Chapter III of the Bar Council of India Rules provides that the Certificate of Practice shall be issued by the Bar Council of India to the address of the successful advocate within 30 days of the date of declaration of results, under the signature of the Chairman.
So the sequence from examination to certificate runs: examination, provisional answer key, objection window, final answer key, result declaration, then 30 days.
For AIBE XXII, with the examination on 29 November 2026 and results between 7 and 10 January 2027, the certificate falls due within 30 days of declaration.
8. Frequently asked questions
FAQ 1. How do I download my AIBE certificate?
Log in to the official AIBE portal with the User ID and password used for your application and download the result or scorecard PDF from the result section. The Certificate of Practice itself is issued by the Bar Council of India and sent to your registered address rather than downloaded.
FAQ 2. What login do I use to check the AIBE result?
The same User ID and password you created when applying. Do not create a new account, as it will not be linked to your application. Use the password recovery option if the credentials are lost.
FAQ 3. Does the AIBE scorecard show marks?
No. It carries the roll number and qualification status only. The Bar Council does not publish sectional or overall scores for the AIBE.
FAQ 4. What are the AIBE qualifying marks?
45% for General and OBC candidates and 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. On a 100-question paper that is 45 and 40 marks, subject to any reduction in the total where questions are withdrawn, or moderation by the Monitoring Committee.
FAQ 5. When will the AIBE XXII result be declared?
The Bar Council’s press release of 18 July 2026 gives the AIBE XXII result declaration as between 7 and 10 January 2027, with the examination on 29 November 2026.
FAQ 6. How long after the result is the Certificate of Practice issued?
Rule 11(1) of the Bar Council of India Rules requires it to be issued within 30 days of the date of declaration of results, under the signature of the Chairman, and sent to the address of the successful advocate.
FAQ 7. Can I practise while waiting for the certificate?
Not independently. A provisionally enrolled advocate may work under a senior advocate but may not appear independently in court until the Certificate of Practice is issued.
FAQ 8. Do I need to renew the Certificate of Practice?
No. Once the AIBE is cleared the enrolment certificate becomes permanently valid, and there is no requirement to reappear for the examination or to renew.
FAQ 9. What if I did not qualify?
Reappear. Rule 10(1)(e) places no limit on the number of attempts. Candidates who failed AIBE XX or AIBE XXI need not register afresh for AIBE XXII and may use their existing login. Note that a provisional enrolment certificate is valid for two years from enrolment, so the examination has to be passed within that window.
FAQ 10. Is rechecking available?
A rechecking or verification window may be opened after the result, on payment of the prescribed fee. It is announced on the official portal and is time-limited, so check the portal as soon as results are declared.
